Et Ilves sellele vaesele maale presidendiks tegelikult tulla ei viitsinud, seda tõendas kogu tema väljendatud olemus presidentuuri alguses üsna selgelt. Blaseerunud olek on alles viimastel aegadel asendunud esindatava institutsiooni omasema maneeriga.
Mäletate, kuidas Ilves Bushi lennukile saates laia lõuaga nätsu näris ja briti kuningannaga kohtudes käsi taskus hoidis? Ja baltlased – kes, kurat, need veel peaksid olema? Mis ei takistanud teda hiljem lätlaste presidendi külalisteraamatu sissekandele familiaarselt „Toomas“ alla viskamast.

Võim on teine aspekt: Eesti on parlamentaarne riik ning kuigi presidendist ja tema rollist räägitakse kohutavalt palju, ei sõltu temast kuigi palju, eriti sisepoliitilises elus. Kui juba vaesusse tuleb minna, siis võiks vähemasti võimu olla.
Miks ta siis ikkagi tuli? Memode põhjal ajendas teda isiklik põlgus Rüütli suhtes. Jah, ka poliitikud on ainult inimesed. Kuidas teisiti saaks ka põhjendada pingsat ootust, et neis materjalides kajastuvad isiklikud hinnangud võiksid jõujooni ümber mängida. Teadagi, et üksteise kohta üht-teist öeldakse. Teame, et avalikult on Reformierakond Ilvese tagasivalimist toetanud. Ilmselt pole see toetus olnud siiras või on seda tehtud n-ö parema puudumisel. Kui oravad on leidnud kellegi etema, siis on aeg tema avalikkusele mahamüümiseks muidugi napp ja selle stsenaariumi teostumisse ma eriti ei usu. Pigem tuletatakse Ilvesele meelde, et ta on ikkagi president suurparteide, eelkõige Reformierakonna armust. Millest teadlikolekut Ilves on ka selgelt väljendanud (loe siit).
